The short version: the markdown files you open are never uploaded, because there is nowhere to upload them to. The website around the app does collect anonymous page views, and the rest of this page explains exactly what that means.
Your documents
Free MD Viewer renders markdown in your browser. When you open a file, it is read from your disk by the browser and held in the page. It is never transmitted anywhere — not to us, not to a third party. There is no upload endpoint and no server-side rendering, so there is no mechanism by which a document could reach us even accidentally.
You do not have to take that on trust. Open your browser's network tab while you work, read the source with view-source or on GitHub, or save the page and use it with your connection switched off.
What stays in your browser
The app stores a few things in your browser's localStorage, on your own device:
- A draft of the document you have open, so a refresh or crash does not lose your work.
- Your preferences — theme, text size, line width, and whether the contents panel is open.
This never leaves your browser and we cannot read it. Clearing your browser data removes it. We set no cookies.
What this website collects
The site is served through Cloudflare, which records anonymous page views (Cloudflare Web Analytics). It is cookie-less, does not fingerprint visitors and does not track you across sites. It tells us how many people visited a page, roughly where from, and which browser — never anything about the files you open.
Pages other than the app also load the Inter typeface from Google Fonts, which means Google receives your IP address as part of that request. The app itself does not: every font it needs is embedded in the file.
Cloudflare also processes server logs in the ordinary course of serving the site, as any web host does. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Copies you download or self-host
A downloaded index.html, or one you serve yourself, has no analytics of any kind —
the Cloudflare beacon is added by our host, not by the app. Such a copy makes no network
requests at all.
If you email us
We will have your email address and whatever you put in the message, and we keep it only to answer you. We do not add you to a mailing list.
Children
The tool is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes with it. The history of this page is public in the repository.
